Though I was born in the U.S. and am a U.S. citizen, I grew up speaking Urdu in a Pakistani-American family in Brooklyn, New York. I lived in Pakistan twice (1996-1997 and 2003-2004), most recently attending high school at St. Mary’s Academy in Rawalpindi. While there, I reinforced my spoken and written Urdu fluency, which continues to the present. I also speak fluent Hindi. Against this background, I have also acquired a deep understanding of Pakistani culture, customs and current events, including colloquial language. I have utilized my language and area skills professionally. Since 2005, I have been translating communications from South Asia for the New York Organization Teachers Network. I also worked at Toy Closet Productions, where I translated, edited and subtitled clips of the movie Without Shepherds. The footage was shot in Pakistan almost entirely in Urdu. I translated it and created English subtitles. Most recently, I worked for Slate magazine, where I translated every episode of the Pakistani news program Apna Gareban, in which an investigative journalist exposed Pakistani corruption.
