I have always been a voracious reader, and now I've turned that hunger towards literature written in foreign languages. So far I have mastered only French, but I am currently making steady (and unexpectedly rapid) progress in Spanish. I have been reading and writing French for five years. I can translate French into English. I am currently working on a literary undertaking of translating a short and interesting "novel" by Sartre, Les Jeux sont faits. I started taking my old college textbook to work and studied it during free time. The community college that I went to didn't offer French, but there were a some old texts from the forties and fifties in the library. These helped remarkably because they were published during a time when students were expected to learn without too much coddling. These books reflected that attitude, and they were filled with text-only pages with a small glossary in the back. I will always remember discovering Merimee and Daudet for the first time! Oh, Carmen, and Oh, Petit Chose. This self study allowed me to pass out of three semesters of intermediate French in order to take the upper level courses where speaking and oral comprehension were stimulated. That is why my self studies in Spanish must be taken seriously, and I have begun encroachments into translating that language by translating news articles into English. My education consists of a BA in English in Creative Writing from the University of Arkansas, but I've had almost twenty years' experience in writing poetry and prose. I've taken 12 credit hours in upper-level French (a minor requires 18).
