Is English for you a second or foreign language? Even if English is your first language, do you have difficulty copying foreign words or phrases into your English compositions (not to mention how difficult it is just to write in English)? I might be just the person to help you! Since obtaining my M.S. in Education form Indiana University-Bloomington, I have gained over twenty years of experience teaching English, especially English as a Second Language or English as a Foreign Language. I have also studied several foreign languages- Spanish, Arabic, French, German, Russian, Dutch and Portuguese. I have traveled in thirty countries and lived fifteen years outside the United States. I have also performed proofreading and copy editing of manuscripts for publications. Therefore, I have a unique ability to help you when expression of thought must cross from one language to another. Here’s how my method works: You send me your draft in English. If I notice an error which reflects direct (but incorrect) translation from your language, I might ask you to write the original expression in your native language, then I can help you re-translate your expression into readable English- an English copy which will be clearly understood by another reader. Here’s a real simple example: A native speaker of Spanish states, “My sister has sixteen years of age.” In my reply to him, I ask him to write the original statement in Spanish. He replies, “Mi hermana tiene dieciseis años de edad.” I then inform him how to express his thought more idiomatically in English as “My sister is sixteen years in age.” or (better yet) “My sister is sixteen years old.” As I mentioned earlier, I can also read original documents in French, German, Dutch, Russian and Portuguese, transmitted either as MS Word® documents (.doc) or handwritten clearly and sent as faxes or scanned copies. What if English is your first language, but you must write foreign names, words and expressions in your paper? I can help you also! Once, I’ll give you this simple example: A writer inserts a German phrase, fur das gute Leben, which means “for the good life”. I would quickly point out that she must put the two dots (umlaut) over the u in fur. Therefore, the corrected version would be für das gute Leben. * Needless to say, I can help you with more ordinary features such as spelling and punctuation. Please let me know if your professor or dissertation/thesis committee has specified whether to write your paper according to Turabian, MLA or Chicago styles. So, whether you speak English as your first language, or have to learn it as a first or foreign language, I’ll be glad to help you! *All users of MS Word need to learn these commands for inserting foreign language characters: Insert>Symbol>Symbols Here is my résumé.
