My grandmother kept stacks of National Geographic magazines and thick novels borrowed from the Pike County Georgia library in a back room of her house. When she was not working in her flower garden or fishing, she was reading. And if you were a grandchild of hers, you read too. Spending summers with grandma was where I picked up a life-long reading habit. Grandma being the norm for what was good and great in life, it was probably inevitable that I ended up in journalism. My first job was copy editor on a daily newspaper in North Carolina. Then I branched out into fine arts, food writing and news reporting. I liked news reporting the most because, to me, there is nothing more thrilling than researching and breaking a big story. I believe most disciplined writers are also good editors. Disciplined writers, I think, consider word selection and how to present their stories with the most impact. They comb through text for unnecessary words and value the power of saying something in clear, plain language. They know spelling or grammatical errors will compromise the quality of their work.
