When they engage an editor, many writers approach the process with a set of expectations which are either too low or too high. Too low: “This just needs a little touching up.” Too high: “This needs a LOT of touching up.” Editing isn’t “touching up.” It’s a close collaboration between two professionals with one goal: to write a document that will result in action. It can be stressful for both, but if it’s a good match they can work wonders. As Mark Twain said, “The difference between the right word and the nearly right word is the same as that between lightning and the lightning bug.” I have 25 years of experience with two international consulting firms writing and editing proposals, reports, brochures and investment profiles in the fields of international economics, telecommunication and government regulation. I specialize in pulling together elements of a complex interdisciplinary work into a final product with a clear message and a single voice. Many engineers and other technical professionals are self-described “poor writers.” I disagree. In my experience such people invariably stay on point and lay out their findings and conclusions in a logical manner. This is the foundation of good writing, even though their first draft may leave something to be desired in terms of style and assume too much knowledge of the reader. After a round or two of questions I can put their work into graceful prose which is technically accurate as well as clear and convincing to their non-technical audience.
