I came to editing reluctantly after a stellar career as a biographer. One of my books (Kilgallen) had been a New York Times best seller; all were selections of Book-of-the-Month Club or Literary Guild. When my planet cooled and book editors stopped taking me to three-martini lunches (How did any of us get back to work?), I landed at Scholastic. There I remained for more than seven years, copyediting all sixteen of the company’s legendary Classroom Magazines, among them Junior Scholastic and The New York Times UpFront. Overseeing the various Scholastic titles required expertise in literature, current events, science, and history. To my surprise, I was happy in my new work. I learned an enormous amount about style, language, and the delicate balance good copyediting necessitates. I left Scholastic in 2004. The following is from a final Performance Appraisal, written by my copy chief: “Lee reads copy and edits for grammar, consistency, and lucidity. She does her work with intelligence, sensitivity, and a keen attention to detail. Many editors have spoken to me about the first-rate job she has done for them. Said one editor, ‘I don’t feel comfortable sending out any article that Lee has not read. She improves everything!’” I’ve stopped thinking of editing as fall-back work. It is immensely satisfying. I do it with pride, passion, and a competency learned over time. When I have reason now to look through one of my books--they are from time to time optioned for movies--I often spot a word misused, a tangled construction, or a bloviated patch of self-indulgence---and wish that I had had me for a copy editor.
