I have been a writer and editor at daily newspapers for about 13 years. Before that, I earned a master's degree in literature from the University of California at San Diego, and I wrote my thesis on the Irish poet Seamus Heaney. I was a writer and editor for the arts and entertainment section of the Oakland Tribune, up in the Bay Area, before moving to Southern California a couple of years ago. Since then, I have worked as a freelancer. I write feature stories, profiles, and theater and concert reviews. Journalism is an exciting career; I have written on everything from my tragic obsession for Ben & Jerry's to a 70-year-old former Roller Derby star to the great Marcel Marceau telling me about his classic mime characters. As an editor, I have really enjoyed that process as well. Polishing a piece feels so satisfying. I love to be able to improve a work of writing -- eliminate mistakes, tighten up the piece, help the writer express his or her ideas more clearly. I have always been a painstaking writer, agonizing over every quotation, comma and colon. Though this makes for draining bouts of word wrestling, there is an upside: I am an extremely detail-oriented, conscientious editor, and I have a strong command of grammar and punctuation. Because I am also a writer, I have a good deal of compassion as an editor. I am always patient and understanding with those I am working with. I know how hard writing can be.
