I have more than 20 years of experience in preparing and editing general as well as technical documents. Finishing schooling in English in India, I did my undergraduate studies in Physics followed by a Master's Degree in Business Administration. Over years, I worked with global corporations such as EDS, Sprint and IBM, both in England and the USA; experience contributing significantly to my language and editing skills. When editing, I generally follow the basic tenets of good editing practice such as use of active verbs, avoidance of stretcher phrases and wordiness etc. On a rare occasion, I feel compelled to sacrifice some of this rigidity, to maintain the intrinsic beauty of a construct. Such decisions depend on the nature of contents, what it endeavors to communicate, to whom and in what manner. I consider techniques adopted by an editor to be equally important to achieve good results. These include reading out aloud, recording and listening to a replay, and above all, intelligent usage of software facilities. Not all editing is the same. General proofreading focuses only on fixing errors. Copyediting includes checking for redundancies, improving word choice and rearranging sentences where necessary. Substantive editing looks at meaning and conceptual structure of a piece as a whole: Does it progress in a logical and understandable way? Are all concepts clearly defined? Such editing often involves restructuring, and even rewriting, the text. A combination of language skills, good practices, a clear understanding of the subject and the context, supported by a wealth of experience is the best bet for good results.
