I am a technical editor, copy editor, and literary editor. I am also as a writer (5 books), and as a writer I empathize with the annoyance of every writer whose work has been mangled by an editor. I will not mangle your work. Together we will determine the level of edit that will improve the document, and when I am finished the work will be better than it was before you handed off to me. And it will still be your work. I view the writing as the creative act and the editing as a supporting activity that should make the work shine—with language that flows gracefully and logic that persuades. For nearly 30 years I have been doing that as a technical editor in large high-tech corporations, in startups, at universities, and in small companies. The variety of my experience reflects my interdisciplinary background. I’ve written and copy edited essays, book reviews, financial-sector and technical-sector articles, white papers, and all sorts of small documents, speeches, and letters. I’ve developed web sites and edited web content and I’ve worn the hat of a literary editor (I edited all five of my own books and two other non-fiction books in addition to the stories and articles of others—you can see my five published books on my Amazon Author page under William McCauley). I am comfortable editing work to conform to styles such as MLA, APA, Chicago style, Turabian, AP, and the Microsoft style guide.
