I am a retired professor of chemistry (PhD organic chemistry, minor physical chemistry/physics, faculty at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1966-1996, analytical chemistry). I have published over 250 science articles, a dozen biographical entries on regionally important chemists and four chemistry and science history books. I have been on several editorial boards of chemistry journals and was editor of a review journal for John Wiley & Sons. I have written at least 3000 letters of recommendation to medical schools, dental schools, graduate schools, and other professional schools, and in return have been visited by admissions committee members curious to meet the person who wrote such extraordinarily useful letters. As editor of Mass Spectrometry Reviews for John Wiley, I rewrote submitted papers from authors whose native language was not English, and I took much time to make major changes to submitted papers from recent graduates who had never written for publication before, but merely submitted the first chapters of their dissertations. One told me later that I had taught him how to write for publication! I also was a reader of at least 50 M.A. theses and Ph.D. dissertations, and always found errors in grammar to correct. My editor for a biography once told me, "You write beautifully. It's too bad you're a scientist."
