After college I served as a military officer. I subsequently was graduated from law school, thereafter becoming the Deputy Director of the Alaska Legislative Council, with major legislative-drafting and statute-revision responsibilities. It was essential that our drafting be clear, succinct, and exact. Subsequently I practiced law, with its concomitant brief-writing. For many years I was a management consultant, writing both proposals and reports. I have read a great deal of English and American literature, and written many papers (including carefully foot-noted college and law-school theses) on a variety of subjects. At present I create a monthly column about words and their use and misuse for the local newspaper. I have a good working knowledge of German (self-taught) and French, and a nodding acquaintance with Italian. My knowledge of English grammar is almost instinctive, as is my spelling. My vocabulary, by test, is unusually large. I have a firm grasp of English grammar and rhetoric and am very sensitive to faults in either. From time to time I edit or comment upon the writings of friends or acquaintances. I do not have experience with highly technical writing, although I have a reasonable layman’s understanding of scientific matters. I am accustomed to meeting deadlines and will edit as the client requests to meet his or her goals.
