I enjoy working on meaningful documents. I like to edit documents dealing with discovery or new knowledge, new insights or better ways of doing something. We all know that the author who has been so intimately involved with his or her creation is not the best judge of how well other people (mere average mortals) will understand what is being said. That is the role I fulfil: the role of the average reader, the man-in-the-street. The second level is to find logical errors. Surprisingly, the experts also make those kinds of mistakes when they write in a language which is not their own. Some statements come out saying the opposite to what was intended. So at that second level I recast statements into something straight-forward with no twists. I move away from passive constructions. And wherever possible I suggest lists (numbered or bulleted). It is surprising how much clearer a statement becomes when the structure on the page fits the logical structure. I like to get ‘into’ the meaning of the written piece (and intention of the author). I like to spend some quality time with these. Sometimes I have to ask the author what a certain statement means. This extra effort is always rewarding. Readers will then better understand what the author wishes to say. Clients from the Chinese speaking countries understand this process well. I don’t usually discount my services. It is so extremely satisfying to deliver a job that satisfies the client. Quality above quantity. [But I assume that I will have to test the effect of discounting from time to time.]
