Born into a family of publishers, I began copyediting and writing as early as I could hold a pencil. My academic specialization in history was actually a way of becoming a generalist: the work of historians touches all disciplines. Finally, my twenty-six years of teaching at the college and secondary school levels have permitted me to develop a knowledge base that is both broad and deep, while my work as an academic team sponsor has helped me to become familiar with every discipline. At the same time, I have spent years as a professional copy editor--of my own work and the work of my students. I am a perfectionist when it comes to written expression; but I have also had to work speedily toward deadlines and consult closely with the authors whose work I was editing.
