I attribute my language skills to study in an Advanced Placement program (English) in high school. Admittedly, I was somewhat afraid of the teacher at the time, but today, 50 years later, I keep singing her praises. Work experience on a suburban newspaper under the tutelage of its founder-editor, and later as an assistant to an educational therapist, further honed my command of the written word. That said, I bring to an editing task experience during the past 10 years as a medical editor-proofreader for health care communications firms, concentrating on scientific journal articles and continuing medical education pieces. In that capacity, I developed an ease of working within AMA style for content verbiage and reference citations. Review by my senior editor described me as follows, “Barbara is a wordsmith, with a strong desire to make every written piece as high-quality as possible. She has become a student on the intricate styles of specific clients.” Ongoing freelance assignments for a pharmaceutical company proofreading copy for drug prescribing information inserts require of me careful attention to detail, constantly being alert to matters of consistency, while at the same time adhering to specific company guidelines for style and content. Additionally, in 2001 I completed an intensive course in medical transcription through At-Home Professions. Although my most recent work experiences have been in the medical arena, I eagerly welcome editing projects in any subject. I love working with words! Prior to finding my way into the medical editing world, I had spent several years working as a presentation (PowerPoint) specialist for a marketing firm.
